Does The Voice in Your Head Control Your Emotions?

The Power of Presence....
Changes can be seen as challenges; challenges can feel like hardships and these hardships are where we need to be in the present and keep our focus so that we may grow.  For some changes bring strength and for others change may leave us feeling anxiety. Eckhart Tolle, a spiritual teacher that I follow had an interesting webinar that seemed to be what I needed.  The webinar was entitled, "The Power of Presence."  I was intrigued by his findings.  Tolle states that presence or awareness is the, "state of consciousness that transcends thinking. It is the awareness that there is a voice inside your head.... you are the observer of your own mind...."As you become aware you, "look at your own thought process." Sounds rather simple and yet this voice can be the catalyst for untold suffering. Tolle explained why this suffering in our minds happens. He stated that, "The reason is that much of the thoughts or self-talk that occurs inside our minds is predominately negative." I know that I can be plagued with this negative jargon, on and on and on inside my head. Eventually, he goes on to say that this talk can become habitual. In other words, we create problems in our own minds by this talk, even when there may not be a problem.

As he continues with his analysis he point out that we need to look into the origin of unhappiness and ask yourself the question: Are you unhappy or is your mind telling you - you are unhappy? The power battle begins. Who will win? That is up to you.... Ask yourself another question...Who do I want to win? Is your mind using you? or are you using your mind? So many questions and the answers can be life changing. Freedom of mind-freedom from your own mind is possible if we are willing to make a mind shift.

Tolle believes that we have to do a "mind shift," so that we are no longer trapped in the conditioned mind. We need notice and become aware of situations where we find ourselves unhappy and ask our selves is this feeling due to the thoughts in my mind telling me that  I am unhappy and not the actual situation. To become aware of what our mind is telling us. Ultimately, to look at the event for what it is and not what my mind may believe it is based on how it has been conditioned.

I hope that his words resonate with you. Take them in, let them sit, as the observer. Notice what you notice and feel what you feel. Let's take ourselves onto our mats and practice; keeping our selves in the present moment.
