Living our lives during the Vata Season

VATA SEASON: Late Fall to Late Winter (Late Sept. to the muds of March)

Elements: Space/Ether & Air

Winter, depending on where you live, often includes snow. A walk in nature brings to it a sense of quietude & stillness. Look to nature in winter; what are the animals, plants, birds doing? They are turning inward; living at a slower pace, with more pause. For beings it can be a time to draw away from the external pressure of life; from the constant feeling that something needs to be accomplished at all times. Instead, slow down and pause. Take a wake and look around. Let go of the noise and rest. Put down the list of do’s and grab a blanket to cuddle with on the couch. It’s okay to put aside and simply let go.

Qualities/Characteristics: light, dry, rough, mobile, irregular, cold, subtle. Queen of change: irregular digestion, unpredictable holidays, influence is cooling & drying, erractice winds. . Dry skin; oil massages, improve circulation, ground.

Vata regulates the nervous system, elimination and the flow of prana (energy), each functions best when the body is given a rhythm; meals & sleep. Stick to a routine, stop multitasking as irregular movements can aggravate the Vata Dosha which can leave us feeling scattered, frenetic, and increasingly anxious resulting in dryness, constipation and anxiety. WE need to ground.

Yoga & Vata: Your yoga practice should include: warmth, stability, circulation & inward quietude. Rest-Reflect-Restore

According to Ms. Russell; "In Early Winter focus on standing, balancing asanas, forward folds & restorative.  In Late WInter the practice will focus on Sun Salutations, backbends, and twists. Your practice might be scaled back during the cold months. Practices are slow & gentle. Warm the body to balance out the coolness of winter."

Meditation during the Vata time is one of centering. Moving our attention inward; away from external pressures.

Pranayama Breathing takes our breath to Nadhi Shodhana or Alternate Nostril Breathing. Nadhi Shodhana clear & purify the channels of the body; and balances the three doshas.

The Law of Ayurveda:  "Like increases like qualities & opposite qualities balance. To balance: reduce what is aggravating & add the opposite quality." (Russell)

What one should EAT:

Healthy fats. Ghee (clarified butter) is a cook’s best friend; especially during windy and cool Vata season. Consume as many healthy fats as possible. This can include: raw milk, olive oil, nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews, hazelnuts), seeds (sunflower, pumpkin), avocado, and of course the golden elixir of life, ghee.

Warm, cooked and heavy foods. Stick to warm and easily digestible meals such as stews, soups, basmati or brown or wild rice, dahl, and cooked root vegetables.

Hot, nourishing beverages. Spiced teas such as ginger, licorice, and cinnamon are balancing for light and airy Vata.  "Golden Milk" can help with stiff joints, strengthen your immunity and bring a sense of calm. (Turmeric, milk (substitute: coconut, soy, oat, or almond milk). Every morning I drink a warm glass of water with lemon in it. I feel as though, and have read, that this really helps with my digestion (I also do three rounds of standing Kapalbhati breathing).

Spices. These exotic Ayurvedic spices not only taste amazing, they are also energetically warming and grounding - and Vata-pacifying. Additionally, they help with digestion, which Vata may struggle with. Try: turmeric, cumin, coriander, ginger, anise, basil, cinnamon, cardamom, fennel, mustard seeds, nutmeg, black pepper, or saffron.

Broths. Sip on homemade vegetable broth, chicken broth, bone broth, as the weather cools. It is also a good idea to drink warm water throughout the day.

What one may want to AVOID:

Foods that may aggravate Vata stay away from raw, cold foods, dry foods, and bitter foods. .. Vegetables high in air & space.  Keep internal fire (agni) kindled.. Eat warm, moist foods (stews, soups, root veggies)..Hot drinks..

Raw foods and salads. These are difficult to digest in Vata season, and will unbalance you during this time. Summer (Pitta season) is the best time to eat raw vegetables.

Bitter, astringent and pungent foods. Indulge instead in sweet, salty and sour tastes, which will balance Vata.

Leftovers, raw foods, canned foods, processed foods - these will aggravate Vata. Eating fresh, homemade, sattvic meals is best for Vata types.

Coffee and caffeinated tea. Especially for Vata-dominant types, these are too stimulating. Consume in moderation. Herbal teas or a coffee alternative are best.

Dry snack foods. This includes chips, popcorn, crackers, and dry, cold cereal. Your body's digestion may struggle with dry foods as they can be difficult to digest.

Life everyday:

I begin everyday with a glass of warm lemon water to cleanse my body.

Try to get 9 hours of sleep a night: bed by ten and up between 6-7 am.

Create a routine and be as consistent as you can.

Reduce your sensory stimulation in the evening by lowering the lights & turning off the tv & technology.

Exercise every day. Take a walk, ride your stationary bike, practice yoga, etc.

Bring the Fire out & Claim your Power: ( 2-Core & Balance Sequences Incl.)

Manipura Chakra
As the seat of digestive fire, this Chakra regulates the function of the Pancreas and digestive organs. Blockages in this centre can cause many health problems such as digestive disorders, circulatory disease, diabetes and fluctuations in blood pressure. However, a strong and active Manipura Chakra greatly supports good health and assists us in overcoming many illnesses. When the energy of this Chakra flows freely, the effect is like that of a power station, constantly supplying vitality - bestowing balance and strength. (taken from yogadailylife.org)

Yogi Educator Kali Basman describes how the Fire Element influences our lives:

Imbalanced Fire:
Imbalanced fire types can experience lack of self-compassion, self-love, manifesting in a need to ensure they are loved and have someone to love.  They often feel lonely, or socially/sexually overactive (yin/yang). Often feels lonely, unloved. Inability to authentically connect but always searching to fill that
Physical symptoms of imbalance: Heart palpitations, chronic stiffness or tension in chest, excessive thirst, poor circulation, BP problems (low/high) hardening of arteries, neck/shoulder pain, Anemia.
Emotional symptoms of imbalance:
  • Lack of self-love, poor self-esteem
  • Emotionally oversensitive – easily hurt
  • Withdrawn and shy or overly communicative
  • Difficulty integrating socially

When fire is in balance: fire types are loving, spontaneous and joyful. Life is full of laughter, fun and creativity. Feeling of being in sync with the self and others. Emotional warmth and radiance. https://www.thekulacollective.com/blog-/5-elements-yin-yoga-fire-element

Yoga is....Finding the Harmony within You

Shala Bali Meditation
Yoga is about clearing away whatever is in us that prevents our living in the most full and whole way. With yoga, we become aware of how and where we are restricted — in body, mind, and heart — and how gradually to open and release these blockages. As these blockages are cleared, our energy is freed. We start to feel more harmonious, more at one with ourselves. Our lives begin to flow — or we begin to flow more in our lives.”
Cybele Tomlinson

This quote, by Ms. Tomlinson resonated with me so much that I wanted to share it with you. I read it through and then re-read her message again slowly, breaking apart each stanza;

"Yoga is about clearing away whatever is in us that prevents our living in the most full and whole way. "
Ask yourself: IS there some reason that you are being prevented from living your life fully/wholly? What is the "whatever" in us that is stopping us?

"With yoga, we become aware of how and where we are restricted — in body, mind, and heart — and how gradually to open and release these blockages. "
As we take ourselves through our practice we become aware of "us." I believe this happens as we feel ourselves, not only physically, but also mentally in each asana. And, it is during this process that we become more aware of the "blockages" and then focus our breath to that particular place (s); be it in our bodies or in our minds. This is a process and it may take time to "open and release."

"As these blockages are cleared, our energy is freed. "
As we practice each asana/posture we may find ourselves becoming more open and new realities may show themselves. In addition, I feel that as we open our bodies & minds we connect to ourselves in a way that seems impossible.

"We start to feel more harmonious, more at one with ourselves."
We find that our breath moves in & out with ease. We find that our body moves in unison with our breath. We are one within ourselves.

"Our lives begin to flow — or we begin to flow more in our lives.”
As a high school teacher I would remind my students, who at times, could become overwhelmed with the pressures of school to, "go with the flow." I even had a small sign that I would place over the digital clock (which drove them crazy) so that they would not be so consumed with time. I wanted them to see that they could truly slow down, focus on what is happening in the present, and use this tool to accomplish what they needed to.

** I would love to read your analysis of this quote.

Lie Low to the Wall Until the Bitter Weather Passes (Gentle Sequence Incl.)

Lie low to the wall
Until the bitter weather passes.

Try, as best you can, not to let
The wire brush of doubt
Scrape from your heart
All sense of yourself
And your hesitant light.

If you remain generous,
Time will come good;
And you will find your feet
Again on fresh pastures of promise,
Where the air will be kind
And blush with beginning.”

John O’Donohue

O’Dohohue’s poem resonated with me and I wanted to share it with you. For the past months our lives have been impacted by Covid; impacting family and friends, and sadly, in some cases tearing them apart. We have been impacted by the election and the pure negative attacks by all; impacting family and friends, and sadly, in some cases straining their relationships. We have been impacted by the various protests, seeing scenes that make ones heart sad and your mind crazy; again impacting family and friends, and sadly relationships have been challenged.  We have been impacted by the fires in our beautiful forests, sending families scrambling for safety and firefighters scrambling to save those same families. Even these have become political. I am tired, we are tired. And so, when I discovered O’ Donohue’s words I found myself internalizing the message he is sharing. Many of us are “lying low until the bitter weather passes.”  I can see myself hunkering down, turning inward, away from the onslaught that has, seemed to, be the norm. Chaos and confusion. Uncertainty and doubt. Anger and frustration. Our emotions are being challenged.

“Try as best you can,
not to let the wire brush of doubt,
scrape from your heart,
all sense of yourself
and your hesitant light.”
This stanza brings out so much emotion for me. I can visualize this giant brush and each bristle is one of the many dilemmas we are faced with tearing at us trying to take away parts of us and the light that burns within diminishes. But, I believe, for many of us, we live by the belief, that we look for the positive; to not lose ourselves in the mire of doubt.

If you could have for props: Mat, Blanket, Blocks (or two equal sized books), a Strap of some sort, and a Firm Pillow by your mat before practice, that would be wonderful.

Building a Strong Foundation: Rejuvenating & Reimagining ( 2 Core & Balance sequences incl.)

As we come into the new year it can be a time of reflection;  paging through the events that we experienced in the past year, both positive and negative. Much like an outline for a book we bring these moments together and within them form where we might see ourselves in the next chapter of our lives. From our experiences we form our values, our priorities, our life's journey. We don't need to throw things out, as that would say that what occurred was not of value; this can create anxiety. I would suggest that we reflect, without judgement, without thinking that we need to fix it. Let us, like the closets that store our clothes, and shoes, and whatever else we find there; let us see these things, feel these things, let go of what no longer serves us so that we can make room for possible new adventures or new ideas or reimagining what is already there.

If you could have for props: Mat, Blanket, Blocks (or two equal sized books), a Strap of some sort, and a Firm Pillow by your mat before practice, that would be wonderful.

Core & Balance: Rejuvenating & Reimagining Practice

TRY THIS PRACTICE FOR MAKING SPACE

Take a moment to gather yourself here.
Let your body land on the ground.
Let your breath arrive in your body.
Let your mind rest on your breath in your body.

Here, now.

Welcome the breath with a receptive belly.
Your breath will gently unravel the tension it meets.
Your breath will tenderly expand you inside.
Allow your breath to unwind you,
unfurl you.

Let yourself be opened by your breath.
Allow your breath to rise and fall.
Let it flow in and out of you,
on its own, softening everything in its path.

Expanding you.

You’re bigger than you think you are.

Adapted from my book, Deep Listening by Jillian Pransky

Much like the trunk of a tree its roots are what holds it to the earth. So too does our lower body. Beginning with your feet, which ground you to the earth much like the roots.  Our legs are the trunk, holding us strong with their many layers of muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. The torso brings the two together so that we can spread our branches knowing that the base is strong.

If you could have for props: Mat, Blanket, Blocks (or two equal sized books), a Strap of some sort, and a Firm Pillow by your mat before practice, that would be wonderful.

Core & Balance: Ankle Strengthening Practice

Let us take ourselves into our practice. Let us remind our selves to
slow down to ground into our trunks, to feel our foundation. Let us tap
into the joy and the good that surrounds us.

For those that do not attend the regular zoom Core & Balance class the cost is $10.00. Payments can be made to:
