Strengthening the core, is in my opinion, the foundation one needs whether we have a yoga practice, a running regime, or living our everyday life. The core is not just our "tummy." There are three areas that are targeted when working our core: the Rectus Abdominis (runs along the front of our abdomen) & Obliques (located along the side and front of abdomen), the Transverse Abdominis (located under obliques and wraps around us like a corset), and the Psoas Muscles, "
- The psoas muscle is located in the lower lumbar region of the spine and extends through the pelvis to the femur. This muscle works by flexing the hip joint and lifting the upper leg towards the body. A common example of the movement created from this muscle is walking (Physiotherapy Clinic Bapunagar Amaraiwadi Odhav Naroda Vastral).
. In order to build a solid foundation all of these areas need to be worked together.
In Anatomical terms there are three planes (see diagram). Core & Balance sequences include each of these planes for an in-depth targeting of our core. Remember that our "core" is not just our abs. Our core includes our entire torso; from the shoulders all the way down to just below the bum. The center of our body; the area that aids us in our daily lives.
Taking it a step further we can focus on the "lines" of our body: the backline (back of the body), the frontline (front of the body), and the sideline (sides of the body). Each of these areas help us stand with stability, bend with assurance, and walk with comfort. For this practice I will be focusing on the backline of the body.
